The purpose of waterproof terminals

The purpose of waterproof terminals

The waterproof terminal is mainly a wiring accessory designed to ensure the safety and reliability of wire connections, prevent leakage and short circuits, in environments that are humid, dusty, or prone to water ingress or rain. In simple terms, it makes the connection point "water-resistant".

Its core function is to solve problems caused by water ingress at the connection point, such as corrosion of contacts, aging of insulation layers, which can lead to short circuits or signal interruptions. These problems account for a large proportion of some equipment failures.

Main application scenarios

Outdoor engineering and lighting: such as LED street lights, garden lights, lighthouses, outdoor displays, etc., which are exposed to long-term sunlight and rain, the connection points must be waterproof and dustproof.

Industrial equipment and automation: like industrial cameras, sensors, machine tools, robots, solenoid valves, etc., which are often in cutting fluid spray, humid or dusty workshop environments.

Automobile and new energy: used in engine compartments, chassis wiring harnesses, as well as charging piles and battery systems of new energy vehicles.

Ships and marine engineering: cruise ships, underwater robots, submarines, etc., which need to cope with immersion or high humidity environments.

Consumer electronics and household appliances: such as electric toothbrushes, massagers, smart water cups, as well as appliances in damp environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Communication and infrastructure: communication base stations, antennas, outdoor detection equipment, etc., to ensure stable signal transmission under adverse weather conditions.

How to achieve waterproofing

The waterproof terminal is not simply "wrapped up", but achieves protection through various designs:

Multi-layer sealing structure: using O-rings, axial sealing rings, silicone rubber gaskets, etc., to form multiple waterproof barriers. Some designs will "tighten the more you screw".

High-performance materials: the shell is made of zinc alloy, aluminum alloy or high-performance plastics, and the sealing rings are made of silicone rubber, etc., to ensure strength, temperature resistance and elasticity.

IP protection level: this is an international standard for measuring waterproofing ability. For example, IP67 (dustproof and short-term immersion), IP68 (continuous immersion), even IPX9K (resistant to high-temperature and high-pressure water jets). The higher the number, the stronger the protection. When selecting, it should be based on environmental requirements.‌

Common types

The family of waterproof terminals has many members. Common ones include:

Waterproof connector: a general term that covers various types of waterproof connectors.

M8/M12 waterproof connectors: the "main force" in the field of industrial sensors, with small size and high protection level.

Waterproof plug: both sockets and plugs have waterproof design, suitable for scenarios requiring plugging and unplugging.

Quick waterproof connector: simple to operate, one plug and one snap can complete the connection, suitable for rapid construction or temporary wiring.
